Endless Highways Power Performance

The Endless Highways® Edition contains a 4KWh of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery. Bowlus Road Chief® was the first travel trailer manufacturer (back in 2016) to develop a solution with this technology.

Endless Highways Power Performance Includes:

  • 4 KWH battery means up to a week off-grid without generator use (Other RV’s battery capability is one-night off-grid).
  • Microwave runs off of battery power (This is not possible or standard in any other RV).
  • A/C runs off of battery power (This is not possible or standard in any other RV).
  • Inverter output to all outlets (All outlets work off of the battery – this is not standard in any other RVs).
  • Run Large Appliances Overnight for a more extended time (This is not possible or standard in any other RV).
  • Continuous Hot Water.
  • Mobile Router with Embedded 3G/4G.
  • Wifi Repeater: allows you to piggyback off of other wifi networks to create your private, secure network.
  • GPS.
  • The ability to booster power: If you are camping with only 15A service, but want to draw more than 15A in your Road Chief, the power booster can make up those extra amps from the power bank in the batteries. This means you can use the A/C and a blow dryer at the same time.

Bowlus Road Chief® lithium iron phosphate batteries are manufactured under European specifications and feature integrated cell balancing and cell monitoring for optimum protection. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are noted for a much wider range capacity than traditional lead-acid batteries for both “usable” capacity” and “cycle life.” A lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is on average about a third of the weight of a traditional battery with a safety discharge range to 20% of the battery capacity. Traditional lead-acid batteries can only drop to 50% before damage occurs. A lithium iron phosphate battery can last more than 3000 charge cycles (8 to 10 years of heavy camping use) versus traditional batteries, which last between 2 to 5 years depending on care. Traditional batteries will self-discharge over time and require a trickle charge to stay healthy during storage whereas LiFePO4 can sit (for months) without losing charge.

The Endless Highways design incorporates complete battery management at the cell level with a disconnect in case of under voltage, over voltage or over temperature. Much like electric vehicles, the Bowlus Power System can dynamically adjust battery charging to protect the lithium iron phosphate battery. If needed, the system will disconnect charging from the tow vehicle and solar panel charging circuits. Traditional batteries and aftermarket lithium systems do not have this level of protection and as a result, require more attention to ensure they do not dip below safe discharge level and permanently damage the batteries.

In addition, the Endless Highways® Edition can function as a four-season travel trailer. A special circuit allows power to flow in the Road Chief in sub-zero temperatures but does not allow the batteries to be charged until they warm up since LiFePO4 batteries should not be charged at low temperatures. Since the batteries are located within the Bowlus Road Chief® shell, this warm-up simply occurs by warming the inside of the Road Chief® using the heating system set on propane or 120V. Additionally, the Endless Highways® Edition allows for the lithium battery to be very slowing charged until the battery reaches over 32 degrees where it can then be charged at the full rate.

The Bowlus Power Management 2,000 W inverter delivers 15A to all the inverted 120V outlets. That means you can easily charge your devices or run a laptop or a CPAP machine while off-grid. The inverter is also pure sine wave, which means that all electrical appliances work just like plugging in at home. A control panel allows monitoring of the entire 12V system. This panel can connect via Bluetooth, allowing all this information to be checked via a smartphone.

The Bowlus Road Chief has Power Boost, an incredible feature to increase your flexibility. If you are camping with only 15A service, but want to draw more than 15A in your Road Chief, the power booster can make up those extra amps from the power bank in the batteries. This means you can use the A/C and a blow dryer at the same time.

The Endless Highways® Edition charges at up to 80 amps, so charging the lithium batteries from 20% to 90% takes just a few hours. The Endless Highways® Edition intelligently manages itself whereas any traditional battery system requires owners to stay “on top” of their power usage.

The power system is often not addressed until after you purchase an RV. Bottom line, don’t be fooled by someone saying “oh yeah, I can upgrade you to Lithium or no problem go off-grid” and think it is the same as the performance of a Bowlus Road Chief. When people talk about why they are upgrading to a Road Chief from another RV, they often comment that their previous RV dealer never adequately addressed their understanding of the power systems which left them disappointed in performance capabilities.

Whether you are looking to be on or off the grid, you need a power solution that will ensure maximum flexibility and reliability. At Bowlus Road Chief®, we focus on meaningful design so you can make every adventure your best.

Do you have further questions about Power Performance? We would love to answer them. Send us an email at sales@bowlus.com or call us at 702-762-9137.

Why RV Safety Matters To You

Driving an RV can often be terrifying even for those who are not first-timers. White knuckling it all the way to your campsite can truly take the fun out of things. However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

When you purchase a vehicle, one of the most important considerations is safety. Safety is vital to protect you and your loved ones when you travel. It is important to put this priority first when you choose your RV. Most RVs do not have the same safety standards, and most are not easy to drive.

The Bowlus Road Chief has superior safety due to its aerodynamic shape, incredibly ultra lightweight aluminum construction (3,000 lbs less) and it’s braking systems. The Bowlus Road Chief is the easiest to drive full size towable – and the safest.

Here are a few essentials to consider:

Acceleration onto highways can be much slower when towing a heavy travel trailer or driving a motorhome. It is concerning to know that you could be cut off and merging can be dangerous when you can’t build up enough acceleration with even a sprinter van conversion. With a Bowlus Road Chief, it is so lightweight and aerodynamic that it is incredibly easy to accelerate. We went 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds with a Tesla X towing the Road Chief.

When you are towing or driving a motorhome, it can take you a long time (and distance) to slow down, so you need to be prepared for that and brake much sooner. Taking a long time to come to a complete stop can be dangerous and does not lend itself to defensive driving practices.. The Bowlus Road Chief has an extremely short braking distance because it is lightweight with top quality electric brakes.

Cross Winds

When you are towing a travel trailer or driving a tall motorhome or sprinter van with large flat sides, you should be concerned with experiencing crosswinds. Crosswinds can move the path of your vehicle sideways and can make you “fight” the wind. The Bowlus Road Chief has an incredibly low center of gravity (while offering the highest clearance) and curved sides meaning that there is minimal flat surface area, so there is much less resistance for the wind to blow at you.

Cell Signal

Most campsites have minimal cell signal, but what if there is a medical emergency. You want to be able to contact the authorities for medical assistance. The Bowlus Road Chief has a cellular booster and router with GPS tracking, so you are never alone and out of touch. The router can even run on two networks, so you never lose coverage when you most need it.

Most RVs do not have secure locks, and their flimsy, small RV style locks are all keyed similar. That means your neighbor could have the same lock as you. At Bowlus Road Chief we use the same industrial door deadbolts that are used to secure millions of dollars of inventory. All uniquely keyed and extremely secure.

At Bowlus Road Chief your safety and security is always of critical importance to us.

How To Get Value For Your Money When Searching For An RV

RV’s have a bad reputation for being poorly built, expensive to maintain, costly to operate and the average ownership length before resale averaging 2-3 years. So, while purchasing a Bowlus Road Chief may seem expensive, it truly is the best RV you can buy for the value. It is also the most sustainable option, purchasing a product that will last you a long time and be fuel efficient while doing so is an incredible contribution you can make towards our collective goal of sustainability.

Here are a few essentials to consider:

Most RVs are poorly built with cheap materials and are something that gets traded within 2-3 years (yes, even Airstreams). We use the highest quality materials and all Bowlus Road Chief are handcrafted by our team of artisans in California. We know it’s essential for us to have an authentic, high-quality product, we wanted your Road Chief to last for 80 years or more so you could restore it and continue to pass it on to your grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Bowlus Road Chief is a multi-generational product. We have designed the Road Chief to be restored in 50 years. We don’t use glues; almost everything can be screwed out. The interior metal walls can come down with rivet nuts and special screws. The entire interior can come out.

It is a problem that RV’s and travel trailers require very large (and fuel inefficient) vehicles to tow them. Add on the fact that many of the places that you want to go with an RV are remote; this increases your chance running out of fuel getting from one gas station to the next in a gas guzzler. The Road Chief is so lightweight and aerodynamic you will enjoy better fuel economy – some of our owners even report over 31 MPG while towing. And looking further out, as gas prices continue to rise, purchasing an RV that can be towed by an electric vehicle is something that will give you substantial value in the long run.

When you are selling your RV when it is only 2-3 years old like we mentioned above, it can mean taking a sizable hit to sell it. Additionally, typical RV financing has a term of 240 months, RV’s rarely out last their payments. Owners are left having to continue a purchasing cycle that is not sustainable, nor financially conscious. In terms of trade in value, no Bowlus Road Chief has been resold, and Bowlus Road Chiefs are designed to last for 80 years using the same manufacturing techniques as the Bowlus Road Chiefs of the 1930s of which over 50% are still on the road.

Maintenance & Wasted Time

When products are poorly built, with cheap materials, this means that they will not last long and they will continually and frequently need replacement. So, not only that you will be spending more money regularly to keep your RV operational because it was not’, to begin with, but you will also be wasting your time both managing that constant repair process and not exploring with your RV – which was your original reason to purchase one. The Bowlus Road Chief is built with the best in class parts and made to stringent standards. We give you all of the information you need to maintain it yourself, and of course, are happy to do that for you. We recommend a two-year maintenance visit of which we complete over a week.

Traveling Across The Country Doesn’t Mean Compromising Your Comfort

Many RV’s fail when it comes to you and your family’s comfort. They have limited living space, weak water pressure, uncomfortable beds, limited storage, and no flexibility. At Bowlus Road Chief, we understand what you are looking for—exclusive adventures in incredible comfort.

Here are a few essentials to consider:

When you purchase an RV, flexibility is essential. You want to be able to have flexibility in travel so no matter your travel companion(s), you are still extremely comfortable. With most RV’s you need to choose your bed configuration, and there is no flexibility with your floorplan. Additionally, in many RV with beds that convert from a sofa to a bed, it is like sleeping on a pull out couch – incredibly uncomfortable. However, with the Bowlus Road Chief, our bedroom can convert from two twin excellent beds to a giant delicious king bed, and you can sleep well knowing that our mattresses are insanely comfortable and thick. The Road Chief sleeps 4, so same goes for the living room, which can convert the sofa and dinette into two more comfortable twin beds.

Most RV’s currently on the market from other manufacturers feel like you are staying in your dorm room again. You can hear everyone breathe all night, rustling around morning, etc. While it might have been fun in college, it’s lost its appeal. Additionally, in most RVs, there is no privacy. The bathrooms have sliding paper doors, no separate bedroom, no privacy area to escape from it all. At Bowlus Road Chief we know how important privacy is.  We have large, solid insulated wood doors, a separate master bedroom, and stabilization jacks. You won’t be woken up by your “roommate” in the middle of the night – and you certainly won’t have anyone hear you while you are in the bathroom.

When you step into most RVs, you feel as though you have just stepped into a motel room that hasn’t been updated since 1982. There are no amenities; the hot water runs out in a matter of minutes from a weak water pressure shower head, there is no storage, and so nowhere to put your necessities. The Bowlus Road Chief is genuinely the most luxurious travel trailer, with the amenities you would expect from a five-star hotel suite. The Bowlus Road Chief has heated floors, continuous hot water, easy access smart storage, cupboards, closets, and sliding drawers. In terms of materials, we use copious amounts of soft leather-like seating, soft-touch surfaces and all real wood or aluminum in our interiors. Bowlus Road Chief also offers routers and cell boosters so you will never be without connection when you want to be.

If you’ve stepped into six months or more old RV, you’ve noticed they have a particularly terrible smell. The truth is this smell is unavoidable because of the way almost all RV’s are built. Two awful smells plague RVs: toilet systems and drain pipes, and once your RV starts to smell like this, it is incredibly hard to reverse this. At Bowlus Road Chief this is never a concern. Our customers are still happily using their RVs that are many years old with absolutely no smells. We use an incredibly hygienic toilet system with a cassette toilet combined with our unique ventilation system. We can go on and on about the improved bowl geometry, seating height (and comfort), as well as the warning system that tells you when to empty it; however, our incredible ventilation system also deserves attention. It’s similar to the activated sludge process used in sewage treatment plants, and it eliminates odors. And to avoid that dry sink odor, every Bowlus Road Chief possesses a unique addition to their drains so that you’ll never get that smell either.

Most RVs are painful for entertaining, with cramped, uncomfortable living and entertaining areas. Seating is ergonomic and uncomfortable. You and your guests are squeezed together like sardines. Even if you are considering RVs that expand their living area with slide outs- think again. As their development occurred in the 1930s, many National Park campsites are smaller, so you will not have the space to slide those out. At Bowlus Road Chief we have a large living area with seating for five people or dining for four. Our seating is incredibly ergonomic, high quality and the spacing distance between you and your guests is both comfortable yet intimate, perfect for creating a really perfect environment.

Most RVs are not pet-friendly. They do not have A/C unless you are plugged into external 30A electricity (generally only found at commercial campsites) and even their fans and heating system suck so much power, you wouldn’t want to leave your beloved animal in there for long in case the battery power dwindled and the system shut off leaving them too hot or cold. The Bowlus Road Chief is perfect for animals, and we’ve tested it with our pets. The Bowlus Road Chief has fantastic cross-ventilation and an incredibly efficient (and silent) heating system on or off-grid. Furthermore, with our Endless HIghways model, you can power your A/C the battery for four hours. So even if you have to leave your pet inside your Road Chief for a few hours while you have dinner out, you know they are safe and being kept in comfortable, safe temperatures.

We design for your comfort,

The Easiest Towing Experience & Our 12 Favorite Tow Vehicles

If you are going to explore the national parks and amazing off-grid locations, you need an RV that is easy to tow and drive. Like you, we understand why towing or driving extremely large vehicles could seem scary and overwhelming. After all, you want to spend your leisure time exploring, not worrying. While this is absolutely the case with monstrous RVs and other towables like Airstreams, it is simply not true with a Road Chief. Towing a Bowlus Road Chief is truly a breeze. Our owners think so too. Read their testimonials for their first-hand experience.

Here are the reasons why the Road Chief is the easiest full-sized travel trailer to tow:

  1. Aerodynamics & Shape: The Road Chief has a truly aerodynamic shape meaning superb handling in crosswinds & when traversing mountains.
  2. Center of Gravity: The Road Chief has a low center of gravity which is important for general handling such as quick lane changes & driving in high winds.
  3. Lightweight: The Road Chief is so incredibly lightweight (up to 3,000 lbs lighter than comparable length travel trailers). It means that you can tow with almost any vehicle and that you’ll be able to accelerate & stop quickly as needed.
  4. Width: With the Road Chief you have a clear path of vision down both sides, making lane changes or pull-ins a breeze. The Bowlus Road Chief tracks directly behind your vehicle, so you don’t need extension mirrors, and there is no worry of not getting through narrow passages.
  5. Sustainability Friendly: Large behemoth RVs cannot be towed by electric vehicles and they make your gas mileage or range dismal. This is not the case with a Road Chief. In fact, our owners report getting over 30 mpg while towing with their Road Chief and up to 200 miles per charge with a Tesla X.
  6. Backing Up: Big RV’s can be stressful to back up and can leave you feeling embarrassed in front of the whole campsite. The Bowlus Road Chief is so easy to back up, getting into that perfect spot. It’s just that easy.

The On The Road Edition has a GVWR of 3,500 lbs. and the Endless HIghways a GVWR of 4,000 lbs. There are truly so many tow vehicle choices. Here are 10 options that our customers report back as loving for their Road Chief adventures:

Naming Your Bowlus Road Chief

What’s in a name?

A lot of thought, if you’re a Bowlus Road Chief adventurer. Many great vehicles have a name, from the Mayflower to the Enterprise. As a finishing touch on the world’s ultimate leisure vehicle, we emblazon the name of your choice on the fender skirts. Romeo’s point was that language is arbitrary and fails to capture the intrinsic nature of the object being described, but ironically, his own name is heavy with cultural connotations. In other words, names matter! The Road Chief isn’t just a travel trailer, after all: It’s an heirloom. For our owners, their Road Chief is a piece of family history.

Many Road Chief owners have named their travel trailers after pets or people, either in honor of or in commemoration of. It’s a beautiful way to express gratitude for the lives that shape our own life, and it’s a reminder of the special adventures shared with them. You don’t have to have name your Road Chief, but if you want to and can’t decide, hand the fun over to the unabashed creatives in the family—your kids or grandkids. Not only does it give them more of a connection to the Road Chief, but it makes for a great story when people ask how your Road Chief came to be named Pixie Dust.

Travel is also a great source of inspiration. Maybe you want to call your Road Chief after the first trip you take. Or the dream trip. From Arcadia to Zion, the list of possibilities is nearly endless. Noun names like Atlas or Desert Mirage can also make for beautiful names. Bless your future adventures with names like The Enchantment, Wanderlust or Fortuity. What do you plan to do when you’re out with your Road Chief? Are you a stargazer? Above & Beyond, Stella, Nova, Zenith. Do you frequent vineyards on your Road Chief travels? Through the Grapevine, Merlot.

A number of Road Chief owners have named their travel trailer after historical vehicles. In other words: famous planes, trains and automobiles. On that note, names inspired by aluminum or silver suit the Road Chief well: Silver Fox, Sterling Moon, Argent Dawn. Inside jokes are yet another avenue. For example, we like the idea of Out of Office for a mobile office. Whatever you decide to call your new Bowlus Road Chief, the final touch on every Road Chief is a name emblazoned on the fender skirts. So what is in a Road Chief’s name? Almost anything you can imagine. It’s just one more way to personalize your adventure vehicle to perfection.

Name away,
Geneva Long

Everything You Want to Know About the Road Chief’s Electrical System

You probably know that the Bowlus Road Chief has the longest-lasting battery on the market. But did you know it has the most flexible charging options, as well? Here’s everything you want to know (and didn’t know you wanted to know) about the Road Chief’s electrical system.

The Bowlus Power Management System

We were the first travel trailer manufacturer to develop a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery solution. Whether you’re using the 2KWh version in the On the Road Edition or the 4KWh version in the Endless Highways Edition, the Bowlus Power Management System is noted for its usable capacity and cycle life. LiFePO4 battery can drop to 20% capacity. The traditional lead-acid batteries found in other RVs can only drop to 50% before inflicting damage on the battery. LiFePO4 batteries last 8-10 years; lead-acid batteries only last 2-5 years.

The LiFePO4 technology features integrated cell balancing and cell monitoring for optimum protection. In other words, you don’t have to worry about damaging the Road Chief’s battery because the battery is able to communicate with the Bowlus Power Management System. This system will dynamically manage charge, shutting off charging if necessary.

The Solar Energy

All Bowlus Road Chiefs come solar power enabled. Other travel trailers place solar power on the roof, but we don’t want to compromise the Road Chief’s aerodynamics. Instead, we recommend portable solar panels. This keeps the center of gravity low, and as a result, makes for better handling. The portable solar panels are about the size of a small suitcase and conveniently fold and store in the closet.

They’re also more flexible than rooftop solar. For instance, you can leave panels at home for shorter trips. Our panels can easily be turned toward the sun for maximum absorption. That also means you don’t have to leave your Road Chief in the sun. We love when we can park in the shade and run the solar panel out into the sun via the connection (it’s the best of both worlds!). Field testing shows that the solar panels can generate 30-50 AMPs, which is ample energy tofor instance—run the lights, operate the refrigerator/freezer and charge your laptop. Our appliances are incredibly efficient, so our customers have found that when its sunny, they can generate the amount of solar energy they would typically use in a day.

Our solar controller has maximum power tracking (MPPT), so these panels harvest much more energy than typical solar controllers. The solar controller can communicate with the LiFePO4 batteries because it’s integrated with the entire Bowlus Power Management System. You can even monitor your solar harvest with your cell phone.

The Charging Options

When it comes to charging, you have a host of charging options at your fingertips. You can easily charge your Road Chief from your tow vehicle via the 7-pin connector while you are en route to your destination. Additionally, a 15 AMP circuit is all you need to juice up. That means you can run all your appliances off of a basic household outlet. Of course, the Road Chief can easily be charged with 30A service, as well as with any of the outlets found at campsites. If you have plans to use a lot of energy (e.g., you want to run your A/C for an extended length of time off-grid), you can easily add a 2,000-watt generator to your Road Chief.

The Road Chief’s revolutionary electrical system is one of the components that make it such an incredible adventure companion. Most RV batteries will only give you a day or two off-grid. The On The Road Edition can last 3-4 days, and the Endless Highways Edition can give you up to a week! The Bowlus Power Management System makes it simple to monitor your energy, while options like the 7-pin connector and solar panels make it easy to generate more. It’s one of many elements that make the Bowlus Road Chief the Ultimate Luxury Off Grid Adventure Vehicle™.

Personalize Your Road Chief

What does the perfect mobile sanctuary look like to you? Warm woods offset with chalky grays? Dark finishes that mingle with bold jewel tones? Your personal palate is unique—your Road Chief’s palette can be too. We offer bespoke design that allows you to customize elements of your luxury adventure vehicle.

Last year, Bowlus Road Chief was invited to be part of a Super Bowl commercial with Keanu Reeves and Squarespace. To commemorate the occasion, we created the Super Bowlus, a Road Chief with a distinctly sporty, masculine touch. The Super Bowlus featured darker woods, a more muted color scheme, and herringbone bedding. It’s an excellent example of how your Road Chief can be whatever you want it to be. For instance, one family selected “zingy” upholstery in majestic royal purple. Another adventurous couple opted for exotic faux-pony skin and a gorgeous, marine-inspired floor.

We carefully curate our color palettes, taking notes from our own Road Chief adventures. For instance, the 2019 Endless Highways features a color scheme called Heart of the Canyons, which reflects the indelible oranges seared into our memories by the spirals of Antelope Canyon and the arcs of red rock found throughout the American Southwest. Our uncompromising craftsmanship and design remains the same, but Road Chiefs built in different years will appear quite different on the inside. In that way, your Road Chief will always be unique. However, you can create something truly special when you explore our bespoke offerings.

With hundreds of swatches to choose from, you can mix and match for hundreds of thousands of possible combinations. Exotic wood tables? We can do that. Striped luxury linens? That too. Vegan leather magenta upholstery? Sure thing. You can even pick the perfect awnings from Sunbrella’s extensive selection. Of course, as with all important companions, your Road Chief will need a namewhich is proudly displayed on the fender skirts.

At the heart of the Ultimate Luxury Off Grid Adventure Vehicle™ is a desire to empower you on a lifetime of adventures. We want you to be able to explore the furthest reaches of your map, so we introduced a battery that allows you to spend up to a week off grid. We want you to be able to tow with your Porsche, Tesla X or other fun-to-drive vehicle, so we use ultralightweight materials and aerodynamic construction. And it’s why we offer services that allow you to tailor aspects of the Road Chief—so it can be a truest expression of how you like to adventure.

Are you ready to tailor your Road Chief? Our Adventure Guides would love to hear what you have in mind. Please reach out to (855) 426-9587 or adventureguide@bowlus.com
