No Range Anxiety Here

This is the second of three parts of our EV towing series. We last left the discussion on tow capacity, which is an incredibly important consideration for the future of EV towing.

However, another consideration is that even if a tow vehicle can tow a behemoth RV, it doesn’t mean that it will still not impact the range. Range anxiety is already real, and charging/superchargers in remote areas where people are camping are even more spread out. Our owners have long been enjoying entirely emission-free cross-country camping trips both across the USA and parts of Canada with a Bowlus and Tesla X combination. As a result, we have applied knowledge in this area, which is extremely important when doing product design.

A Tesla X towing a Bowlus gets up to 200 miles per charge. There’s no other electric duo that comes close (vehicles of comparable length don’t even make it past the 50 to 95-mile range). The Bowlus, after all, has its roots in aircraft construction. Its ultralight weight is yet another feature that makes it the ideal companion for an EV. The result? A highly stable and pleasurable towing experience at 65 mph. One further point for consideration as range looks to extend in the future is, should range be used for enjoyment and convenience rather than to be consumed towing a poorly designed vehicle? For us, the answer is a resounding no.

Ultralight weight with critical design parameters can also streamline the charging process. If an EV charging station doesn’t have space for your Bowlus, you’ll have to park it in an adjacent spot. This would be a significant hassle with most trailers, but not with the Bowlus since it can be hitched or unhitched in under a minute. It can also be moved by one person and only taking up just one parking spot. The Bowlus streamlined profile means it’s narrow enough to be pulled behind your EV without extension mirrors, which can also detract from your range. The handling of your Bowlus is unparalleled: you can cross narrow bridges and find parking options with ease.
